Chopsticks

Chopsticks
By: Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Scott Magoon

Summery:

Chopsticks is an adorable book about two best friends, the chopsticks. They love to do everything together from basics like stirring the food to more complex moves such as cutting asparagus. It was during one of these fancy moves that one of the chopsticks had a major accident.

After being "Whisked" away to the doctor, he was told that he needed to rest for a while. Not wanting his friend to be lonely, both chopsticks lay side by side. A full week later, the injured chopstick informed the other it was time for him to make his own fun. Nervous and not knowing what to do, he ventured out to find his own fun. He was amazed by what he can do alone from shooting Play-doh Balls to playing Pick-Up Sticks. He had learned to be his own individual.

It was being an individual that brought the two chopsticks close together. They learned that having alone time can be amazing. They shared their experiences and from that made new ones. They learned the importance of being both an individual and a good friend.

Pros:
  • Friendship
  • Differences
  • Loyalty
  • Fun to read out loud
  • (Fun for parents to read)
Cons:
  • Nothing
Suggestions:
  • After you read this book with your child, talk to them about their friends. Ask them what they like to do together and what they might do alone. As you are talking show them how just like the chopsticks they can be both a friend and an individual.
  • Show your child what it is like to be different. You can take them to a local special needs school to do some volunteering. Before you go, you can explain to your child that even though they may look and act different, they are still people that need to be loved and respect. When you get home, you can talk about the experiences.
Age Range:
  • 4-8 years
  • Child struggling with balancing friendships
Bottom Line:

This book is amazing for so many reasons. First of all, it is a fun read out loud book. As a parent, I found myself chuckling at some of the jokes. Not only is this an amazing book to read out loud but it touches on some really important issues that children are faced with such as friendship.
